Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Stopping cavities without the drill.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a gentle liquid applied to cavities to slow or stop tooth decay. It works by hardening weakened areas of the tooth and reducing harmful bacteria. Unlike a filling, it does not rebuild the tooth — but it can protect it until further dental care is possible.
Because of how it works, SDF permanently turns the decayed area dark, usually black. While this change is mostly cosmetic, it signals that the cavity has been treated and is no longer active.
Not everyone is a candidate for SDF. You will first be assessed by your hygienist to determine if this treatment is appropriate for you. SDF may be considered for children, older adults, or for individuals for whom traditional dental treatment may not be immediately possible. Our hygienists are authorized to prescribe and apply SDF under the Health Professions Act of Alberta, and we always recommend follow-up with your dentist to decide on the best long-term plan for your oral health.

“Silver diamine fluoride has changed the way we manage cavities in vulnerable populations — it’s a game-changer in reducing suffering and providing care without trauma.”
