Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART)

Gentle care to protect teeth when traditional fillings may not be possible.

Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is a minimally invasive way of managing tooth decay. Instead of drills or anesthetic, our hygienists use hand instruments to gently clean softened decay and place a protective restorative material that seals and strengthens the tooth. This approach reduces discomfort, preserves as much natural tooth as possible, and helps stabilize oral health when more traditional dental procedures may not be immediately available.

ART can be especially helpful for children, older adults, and anyone who may find standard dental treatment challenging or overwhelming. It may also be considered when access to dental care is delayed. While it does not replace the need for long-term dental treatment, ART can provide protection, comfort, and function until further care is possible.

FAQ

Will it look like a normal filling?
The material used in ART blends with natural tooth structure, but it may not look exactly the same as enamel. Its purpose is primarily protective, not cosmetic.

Is ART right for everyone?
Not always. Our hygienists carefully assess each patient to determine if ART is appropriate. It is only provided when it meets clinical standards of care.

Do I still need to see a dentist?
Yes. ART is a helpful interim option, but we always recommend follow-up with your dentist to ensure long-term stability and a complete care plan
