Fluoride Treatments

An extra layer of protection for stronger, healthier teeth.

Fluoride has been studied for decades as one of the most effective ways to prevent tooth decay. Unlike community water fluoridation — which is not added to Canmore’s water supply — our professional fluoride application is a safe, targeted option that helps protect teeth where they need it most.

During your appointment, our hygienists may recommend fluoride varnish if you are at higher risk of cavities, have sensitivity, or simply want added protection. This varnish is applied directly to the teeth, where it bonds to the enamel and helps rebuild weak spots caused by acids and bacteria. Because the fluoride stays on the tooth surface and sets quickly, it maximizes local benefit with very minimal absorption into the rest of the body.

Research shows that professional fluoride varnish is highly effective:

  • It reduces the risk of cavities by up to 43% in children and adults.

  • It has the highest uptake into tooth enamel compared to other forms of fluoride.

  • It is considered safe for use across all ages, including children and seniors.

Fluoride is most effective as part of a bigger picture: daily brushing, cleaning between teeth, and a balanced diet low in sugar remain the foundation of oral health. Professional fluoride treatment adds an extra layer of defense to keep teeth stronger for longer.
